Goal 2: Zero Hunger

Share this page:

End Hunger, Achieve Food Security and Improved Nutrition and Promote Sustainable Agriculture

SDG 2 aims to end hunger, achieve food security, improve nutrition, and promote sustainable agriculture. In this context, the Kingdom of Bahrain places food security among its national priorities, guided by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa’s directives to strengthen the sustainability of the food ecosystem and bolster national food production. In alignment with this vision, the Kingdom continues to diversify food supply chains, support local farmers and fisheries, deploy advanced agricultural technologies, and foster regional and international partnerships, thereby enhancing the efficiency and resilience of the food sector in addressing emerging challenges.

Examples of National Initiatives Supporting the Achievement of this Goal

Strengthening National Food Security through Bahrain Food Holding Company (Ghitha)

Bahrain Food Holding Company (Ghitha) was established in 2024 by Mumtalakat, Bahrain’s sovereign wealth fund, to enhance food security and support the growth of the agri-food sector by consolidating national food assets, strengthening local production, and attracting investments. In 2025, the company launched its strategy to develop an integrated ecosystem for food production, processing, and distribution, while strengthening partnerships with the private sector and developing national talent. Among the key projects outlined in the strategy is the “Food City” project, with its first phase spanning one million square metres and providing integrated infrastructure for food industries, processing, storage, and logistics services.

National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD)

Launched in 2010 under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Wife of His Majesty the King and President of the Supreme Council for Women, the National Initiative for Agricultural Development (NIAD) aims to advance Bahrain’s agricultural sector and strengthen its contribution to sustainable food security. The initiative focuses on enhancing agricultural production and expanding green spaces by promoting modern agricultural practices and improving resource efficiency. It also implements a range of national projects and programmes, including the Bahrain International Garden Show, the King Hamad Prize for Agricultural Development, the “Forever Green” campaign, and the AgroBH digital platform.

Mara’ee Exhibition to Enhance Food Security and Local Production

The Kingdom of Bahrain continues to strengthen food security and support agricultural and livestock production through the Bahrain International Agricultural and Animal Production Exhibition (Mara’ee), one of the region’s leading specialized exhibitions. The exhibition serves as a platform to showcase the latest technologies and innovations in agriculture and livestock production, facilitate the exchange of expertise and knowledge among specialists and producers, and highlight sustainable solutions that enhance production methods and efficiency. It also supports local producers and encourages investment and innovation in the agricultural and livestock sectors, contributing to the sustainability of national production and food security.
