More than 10,000 saplings have been planted across Bahrain’s governorates as part of this year’s Tree Week, with wide participation from government entities, private sector companies and civil society organisations.
Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Undersecretary for Municipal Affairs at the Ministry of Municipalities Affairs and Agriculture and Chairman of the Tree Week Organising Committee, said the initiative supports the National Action Plan to achieve carbon neutrality, announced by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.
Launched by His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, Tree Week promotes community participation in expanding green spaces and achieving national afforestation targets. Shaikh Mohammed also highlighted the efforts of His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa in following up on the afforestation plan and the Bahrain Mangroves initiative.
The ministry implemented a programme in cooperation with relevant entities, covering tree-planting activities at police stations, public and private schools, health centres and housing cities, as well as the participation of 36 youth centres. Activities also included a mobile nursery distributing saplings and providing agricultural guidance, awareness and training workshops, and interactive agricultural awareness platforms at four shopping malls across the governorates.
Shaikh Mohammed bin Ahmed commended the participating government entities, municipal councils, private companies, civil society organisations, sports clubs and volunteers, highlighting the role of the National Initiative for Agricultural Development in supporting the programme and strengthening public-private partnerships.
He affirmed that the broad participation reflects growing environmental awareness and supports Bahrain’s sustainable development goals and efforts to achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. He added that the ministry would continue expanding afforestation initiatives and partnerships to increase green spaces and preserve natural resources.
