The Supreme Council for Environment (SCE), in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and with support from the Global Environment Facility (GEF), held a national workshop titled "Final National Workshop of the Global Biodiversity Framework – Early Action Support Project."

Dr. Mohamed bin Mubarak Bin Dainah, Minister of Oil and Environment and Special Envoy for Climate Affairs, attended the workshop alongside representatives from government bodies, academic institutions, the private sector, and civil society.

Discussions focused on aligning Bahrain’s biodiversity strategy with international frameworks, enhancing monitoring systems, and laying the foundation for sustainable policy and financing.

Dr. Bin Daina stressed that aligning national policies with the global biodiversity agenda is essential to achieving long-term environmental sustainability. He underlined the value of cross-sector collaboration in meeting national goals, completing monitoring frameworks, and advancing future planning. He also praised the UNDP’s contribution and highlighted the importance of continued cooperation to protect biodiversity.

Asmaa Shalabi, Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) to Bahrain affirmed the organisation’s support for Bahrain’s environmental initiatives, noting that the Kingdom’s progress reflects the strength of institutional coordination and shared commitment to nature-positive development.

The workshop concluded with the adoption of 23 national biodiversity targets to be implemented between 2026 and 2031. These targets include establishing tracking systems, identifying relevant policy actions, and preparing for more advanced phases, particularly biodiversity financing.
