09/09/2025
A team from the Ombuds Office, in cooperation with the Directorate of the Reformation and Rehabilitation Centre in Jaw, carried out an inspection visit to review the quality of educational services provided to inmates.

During the visit, a new initiative was announced allowing eligible inmates to enrol in academic programmes at Bahrain Polytechnic.

The programme combines online and in-person study to ensure continuity of education while considering inmates’ circumstances. Admission requires passing Bahrain Polytechnic’s entry exam, ensuring participation by motivated students.

Ghada Hameed Habib, Secretary-General of Ombuds Office, said the initiative is the result of joint efforts by the Ministry of Interior’s General Directorate of Reformation and Rehabilitation, Bahrain Polytechnic, the Nasser Vocational Training Centre, the Ombuds Office, the Prisoners and Detainees Rights Commission, and the National Institution for Human Rights.

She added that the initiative reflects Bahrain’s commitment to protecting human rights and dignity, and to providing education and rehabilitation opportunities that support inmates, their families, and society.

Hamad Salman Taqi, Director of the Correction and Detention Facilities Monitoring Directorate at the Ombuds Office, said the initiative reinforces inmates’ sense of responsibility and equips them with skills and discipline to help secure employment after release. He added that it complements other Ministry of Interior projects such as alternative sentencing and open prisons, which underline Bahrain’s reform-focused approach and commitment to human rights.
