The Royal Medical Services announced that a sickle cell patient has been discharged from the hospital after successfully completing treatment through a bone marrow transplant using CRISPR gene-editing technology. He is the first sickle cell patient outside the US to be publicly announced as having received the treatment successfully.
Brigadier General Dr. Shaikh Fahad bin Khalifa Al Khalifa, Commander of the Royal Medical Services, said that this medical achievement by the Bahrain Oncology Centre reflects Bahrain’s development in providing advanced treatments. He attributed this to the vision and directives of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the continued follow-up of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince and Prime Minister.
He added that the Royal Medical Services remains committed to offering the latest treatments and enhancing collaboration with global health institutions and organisations to ensure the highest standards of healthcare for all citizens and residents.
The patient expressed gratitude to His Majesty the King, HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, and the medical team at the Royal Medical Services for their care and support throughout his treatment. He highlighted Bahrain’s advanced medical care and healthcare facilities, noting their key role in his successful recovery.
He also highlighted the visit of HRH the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, describing it as a meaningful gesture that reinforced Bahrain’s commitment to prioritising the well-being of its people. He expressed appreciation for the Kingdom’s leadership and expressed hopes for Bahrain’s continued development.
