Government Hospitals laboratories obtain global CAP accreditation
19/01/2026
Government Hospitals Administration announced that their medical laboratories have been awarded accreditation by the College of American Pathologists (CAP), one of the world’s leading accreditations in medical laboratory quality. The achievement reflects the administration’s commitment to applying international standards in testing accuracy, patient safety, and the quality of healthcare services.

The accreditation confirms the laboratories’ adherence to best practices by strengthening the reliability of test results, reducing errors, and implementing rigorous procedures across all stages of examination, from sample reception to the issuance of results, alongside continuous development of quality systems and training.

Dr. Maryam Athbi Al Jalahma, Chief Executive Officer of Government Hospitals, said that obtaining CAP accreditation forms part of ongoing efforts to advance diagnostic services and develop the healthcare system. She commended the dedication of national medical and administrative staff whose contributions were instrumental in achieving this milestone.

For her part, Dr. Nermin Kamal Hassan, Head of the Pathology Department and Head of Laboratories Unit, said that CAP accreditation enhances laboratories’ readiness for continuous assessment and supports institutional development efforts, while raising operational efficiency and developing national competencies in line with the aspirations of Bahrain’s healthcare sector.

CAP accreditation is an international benchmark granted to laboratories that meet stringent requirements of quality, accuracy, and governance, and contributes to strengthening public confidence in the diagnostic services provided.

It is noteworthy that the new Central Laboratory at Salmaniya Medical Complex features integrated systems and advanced equipment that enhance operational efficiency, with a capacity exceeding 12,000 samples per hour. Storage capacity has also been increased by 50 percent to more than 46,000 samples, while the new electronic system accelerates the reception and analysis of samples to better serve visitors to the complex and healthcare institutions across the Kingdom of Bahrain.
