The Ministry of Sustainable Development, in collaboration with the Bahrain Institute for Pearls and Gemstones (DANAT), held an event on the sidelines of the High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development (HLPF), titled "Natural Pearls as Marine Natural Capital: Traceability, Conservation, and Sustainable Value Chains".

The event brought together experts from the World Jewellery Confederation (CIBJO), the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Cornell University and the Arabian Gulf University (AGU), to showcase Bahrain’s experience in positioning natural pearls as a model that integrates the preservation of marine resources, scientific research, and sustainable development.

The event was opened by Noor bint Ali Al Khulaif, Minister of Sustainable Development and Chief Executive of the Bahrain Economic Development Board (EDB), who delivered keynote remarks emphasising that natural pearls, as a renewable marine natural resource, stand as a symbol of Bahraini identity and heritage. She highlighted that Bahrain’s Natural Pearl Model reflects the Kingdom’s approach to safeguarding natural resources, advancing innovation, and strengthening international partnerships, in line with Bahrain Economic Vision 2030 for sustainable development and commitment to accelerating progress towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals.

The event showcased Bahrain's pioneering experience in the natural pearl sector as an integrated model that combines the Kingdom's rich pearling heritage with scientific research, marine environmental protection, economic value creation, and responsible practices in the jewellery sector. It highlighted natural pearls as a renewable marine resource supported by scientific documentation, marine resource protection, and sustainable sector development.

The discussions also underscored the historical significance of natural pearls as part of Bahrain's identity for more than 5,000 years and as a key economic resource throughout its history, while highlighting the role of scientific research and partnerships in protecting pearl oyster resources, promoting circular economy principles, engaging young people, and strengthening responsible practices across the jewellery sector.

Noora Jamsheer, CEO of DANAT, said the Kingdom has developed a unique model that combines its rich historical heritage, scientific advancement, and a strong commitment to protecting the marine environment. She said DANAT's participation reflects its continued efforts to strengthen Bahrain's position as a global centre of excellence for natural pearls and gemstones and support international dialogue on the sustainability of marine resources. She added that the centre continues to advance scientific knowledge in the pearl and jewellery sector, reinforces confidence in Bahraini natural pearls, and highlights their role in global value chains and responsible practices across the jewellery industry.
